What Just Press Record actually does

Just Press Record, made by Open Planet Software, first shipped in September 2015 and is still shipping — its App Store listing shows version 51.2 released in May 2026, a 4.3-star average from roughly 1,500 US ratings, and a single up-front price of $6.99 that covers iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch together. One tap starts a recording, the app turns it into searchable text in over 30 languages, and everything syncs through iCloud Drive or stays on the device, your choice.

That is a decade of steady work on a hard problem, sold without a subscription. If the paragraph above describes what you need, this page is going to tell you to keep using it.

Where Just Press Record genuinely wins

• You pay once. $6.99, no renewal, per its listing as of July 2026 — and in a category that has moved almost entirely to subscriptions, that is the single most defensible reason to choose it. Our transcription runs on a paid model per recording, so we charge a subscription for it. We are not going to dress that up as an advantage.
• Four devices, one purchase. iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. We are iPhone and Apple Watch only. If you want to record at a desk on a Mac and pick the file up on an iPad, that is not a thing we do.
• Over 30 languages, per its listing, independent of your device language. We are strongest in English and do not publish a language count we cannot stand behind.
• Unlimited recording length, on the phone and on the watch. Our cap is 90 minutes per recording on Pro. For an all-day conference or a long rehearsal, that difference is decisive.
• Your audio need never leave your devices. Recordings live in iCloud Drive or locally, and its listing says the transcription is stored inside the audio file itself. Ours are sent to a server to be transcribed and deleted afterwards — a real difference, and if your rule is "nothing goes to anyone's server," theirs is the honest answer.
• Editing and pro-audio. Waveform trimming, correcting the transcript by hand, external microphones, WAV and AIF files up to 96kHz / 24-bit. We do none of that.

Where it runs out

Just Press Record is built around dictation — you, close to the microphone, saying something you want written down. Its own listing is upfront about this: it asks you to avoid noisy environments and keep the microphone near the source. Point it at a meeting instead and two things go missing.

• Nobody is labelled. Its listing does not describe speaker identification, so an hour with four people in the room comes back as one continuous wall of text. Working out who agreed to the deadline means scrubbing the audio, which is the work you recorded to avoid. Speaker diarization is the feature name, and it is the whole reason this page exists.
• No summary. Its listing describes no summarisation, so the output is the full text and nothing above it. We generate a summary on Pro. That matters more the longer the recording gets.
• Dictation-shaped accuracy. Text produced as you speak, close to the mic, is a different problem from text produced from several voices at conversational distance. We transcribe after the recording ends, which is what makes speaker labels possible in the first place — but we have not run a head-to-head accuracy test against them, so we are not claiming one.

One thing that is not a difference: neither app records phone calls or audio from other apps. Their listing says so explicitly, and iOS does not permit it for us either.

How to decide in one line

• Stay with Just Press Record if you are dictating — notes, ideas, letters, a thought on a walk — or if you want a Mac and iPad in the mix, record for hours at a stretch, work in a language other than English, or simply refuse to rent software. Every one of those is a good reason and none of them is a compromise.
• Switch, or run both, when other people are in the recording — meetings, interviews, seminars with questions from the floor — and the transcript is useless unless it says who spoke.

Running both is a perfectly sensible answer: one app for the things you say, one for the things you are told.
