Voice Memos is designed around one person talking to their own phone. The moment a recording contains a conversation, three gaps open up:
- No speaker labels. A transcript of a four-person meeting arrives as one undifferentiated wall of text. Working out who committed to what means listening to the audio again — which defeats the point of having a transcript.
- No structure after the fact. There is no summary, no list of decisions, nothing that turns forty minutes of talking into something you can act on.

How to decide in one line

Is Apple Voice Memos free?
Yes, completely. It is pre-installed on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch at no cost, with no limit on how much you record. That is genuinely hard to beat, and it is why we tell people to start there for simple memos.
Does Voice Memos transcribe recordings?
On iOS 18 and later it can show a transcript of a recording and let you search it. What it does not do is label who is speaking, which is the gap that matters once more than one person is in the room.
Do voice memos get deleted?

Are voice memos secure?
