How to Turn Lecture Recordings Into Notes You Can Study From
A recording is not revision. Three passes that turn a recorded lecture into notes you can sit an exam with — plus what transcripts miss and how to ask permission.
The short answer: Transcribe the lecture, then do three fast passes over the text — skim for structure, mark the handful of claims that could be examined, and rewrite those in your own words as questions. The recording is raw material; the notes are what you make from it.
Recording a lecture feels like insurance. It usually turns into a graveyard: forty hours of audio you will never replay, sitting on your phone until the exam panic starts and there is no time left to listen to any of it.
The fix is not recording less. It is having a repeatable way to get from audio to something you can revise from — ideally within a day, while the lecture is still fresh enough that you remember what mattered.
Why re-listening does not work
Playing a lecture back at 1.5× feels productive and mostly is not. You are doing the same passive thing you did the first time, at greater speed and with less context. It is also brutally slow: a semester of one-hour lectures is more listening than you have hours for.
Reading is roughly three to four times faster than listening, and — more importantly — text can be skimmed, searched, and rewritten. That is the real argument for a transcript. It is not that the words are more accurate on the page; it is that text is something you can work on, and audio is something that only plays at you.
Step 1: get a searchable transcript
You have a few honest options:
- Apple’s built-in transcript. On iOS 18 and later, Voice Memos can show a transcript of a recording and let you search it. It costs nothing and it is enough for a single-voice lecture.
- An app that transcribes automatically. Record and Transcribe produces a transcript after every recording without you starting anything, and labels who is speaking — which matters more than you would expect in a seminar, where separating the lecturer’s claim from a classmate’s guess is the whole point.
- Whatever your university provides. Many lecture-capture systems already publish captions. If yours does, use them; there is no prize for duplicating work.
If you record from an Apple Watch, note that the audio transcribes once it reaches your iPhone rather than on the wrist itself.
Step 2: three passes over the text
This is the part people skip, and it is the part that produces notes.
Pass one — structure, two minutes. Skim the transcript and write down the lecture’s shape: the three to five things it was actually about. Lecturers signpost constantly (“the key distinction here”, “this comes up in the exam”), and those phrases are searchable.
Pass two — mark what is examinable, ten minutes. Go through and mark only claims that could plausibly be a question: definitions, causal arguments, the conditions under which something holds, the classic counterexample. You are looking for five to eight per hour of lecture, not fifty. If everything looks important, nothing has been prioritised yet.
Pass three — rewrite as questions, fifteen minutes. Take each marked claim and write it in your own words as a question with the answer underneath. “Why does X fail when Y is absent?” beats a highlighted sentence, because it forces retrieval later instead of recognition. Testing yourself on material is consistently better for retention than rereading it — that finding is about as settled as study research gets, and it is free to act on.
What you now have is a page of questions per lecture. That is a revision resource. A transcript, by itself, is not.
Step 3: use search before the exam
Keep the transcripts. When revision starts, searching “diminishing returns” or “confounding variable” across a whole semester finds every moment the lecturer touched a concept, including the offhand aside that turns out to be the exam question. This is the one thing the audio-only approach cannot do at all.
What transcripts are bad at
Being honest about the limits will save you a nasty surprise in week ten:
- Anything visual is gone. Formulae, diagrams, code on slides, and anything the lecturer drew do not exist in a transcript. Photograph the board or grab the slides; the transcript covers the talking, not the showing.
- Notation gets mangled. Mathematical and chemical expressions read aloud come out as words, and rarely the right ones. Technical modules need your own written notes alongside.
- Unfamiliar names and jargon drift. Expect surnames, drug names, and case citations to need correcting. Fix them on the first pass while you still remember what was said.
- A bad recording produces a bad transcript. No transcription can rescue audio recorded from a bag at the back of a large hall.
Practically: put the phone on the desk, screen up, with nothing on top of it, and start recording before the lecturer starts talking. If your phone will be in a pocket, record from the watch instead.
Ask first
Whether you may record is your university’s decision, not a technical question. Policies vary widely: some institutions permit personal recording by default, some ask you to get the lecturer’s agreement, and most will grant it automatically as a disability accommodation if you need one. Ask once, early, and you never have to think about it again.
Two things are worth holding to regardless of policy: recordings of other students’ contributions are not yours to circulate, and lecture audio should not end up anywhere public. Keeping the audio on your own device rather than in someone’s cloud workspace makes that easier to promise.
The workflow, once more
Record with your notes as the primary act. Transcribe the same day. Three passes: structure, examinable claims, questions in your own words. Photograph anything visual. Keep the transcripts searchable for revision week.
